KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women???s track & field team remained in second place in the third regular-season edition of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Rankings, released Wednesday.
The Lady Vols accumulated 132.07 ranking points this week to hold their ground in second place. LSU, the preseason No. 1 squad, remains atop the heap at 206.40 after improving greatly from a total of 171.94 a week ago. Michigan moved into third at 130.18, followed by Texas A&M at 128.42 and Stanford in fifth with 123.19.
The Southeastern Conference retained its number of teams in the USTFCCCA Rankings at seven. SEC schools joining LSU and Tennessee in the top 25 include Arkansas in seventh at 96.08, Florida in 13th at 52.06, Mississippi in 14th at 51.53, South Carolina in 20th at 43.88 and Kentucky in 21st at 42.55.
Tennessee has essentially four automatic NCAA qualifying performances and 14 provisional marks through four meets in 2008. The Big Orange???s top events at this stage of the season include the 60m dash, mile run and distance medley, where UT has auto qualifiers in each. Annie Alexander is a half inch shy of the auto mark in the shot put, so she is considered UT???s fourth NCAA shoe-in.
The 2008 USTFCCCA Division I Rankings are compiled strictly from the NCAA descending order qualifying lists by Tom Lewis, assistant sports information director at the University of Missouri. The 2008 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.
