Tennessee men's golf coach Jim Kelson announced today that Jay Vandeventer and Adam Myers have signed to play golf at the University of Tennessee beginning in the 2009-10 season.
"We are extremely excited that Jay Vandeventer and Adam Myers have decided to join our program." Kelson said. "This ranks among the top classes we have signed in the last ten years."
Vandeventer hails from Bristol, Tenn. He is currently ranked 18th in the Golfweek Junior poll, along with being ranked 17th in the Junior Golf Scoreboard poll. He has 13 top-10 finishes in National Junior events and seven top-5 finishes in American Junior Golf Association events.
"Jay is undoubtedly the most highly decorated and recruited prospect that we have been able to land during my tenure here at Tennessee." Kelson said. "He is definitely one of the top 10 players in his recruiting class in the United States. We expect him to make an immediate impact. He is one of the longest, straightest drivers of the ball that I have ever seen. Beyond his enormous golf skills, Jay is a terrific young man. We have been extremely impressed with everything about Jay for a long period of time. He definitely comes from good stock. His parents, Vera and John, have been terrific throughout the whole recruiting process."
In 2008, Vandeventer tied for fifth at the Horseshoe Bend Junior Classic. He also tied for third at the Club Car Junior hosted by Charles Howell III. A graduate of the Baylor School in Chattanooga, he finished third in the TSSAA Div. II-AA State High School Championships. At the United States Junior Amateur Championships, he finished tied for 24th in the stroke play qualifying. He finished 16th in the 2008 Tennessee State Amateur. He also won the 2007 IJGT Harbor Town Links Championships, shooting a 68 in the final round.
Myers is from Northampton, England where he finished second in the Henry Cooper Junior Masters and fourth in the Carris Trophy in 2008. Myers also represented England in this year's Home Internationals. He was also part of the winning England team in the Canadian Junior Challenge in 2008. Myers also won the prestigious McGregor Trophy (Under 16 players) in 2005, the 2007 EGU Midland Qualifier, including a course-record 63 in the second round, and the 2008 Dorset Scratch Open.
"Adam joins us as a very pleasant surprise. We originally did not think that we would be able to land Adam; however, things just seemed to work out." Kelson said. "Adam has proven to be one of the best young golfers in Great Britain for about the last four years. In our opinion, he is one of the top prospects in all of Europe. He is very long and possesses a superb touch. His stature, 6-4, 200 lbs, should prove to be a big advantage for him. Additionally, Adam is a very bright young man. He is also very mature for his age. Adam and his family were very highly recommended from several prominent individuals associated with English golf. We think that all of these factors will enable Adam to vie for a starting position immediately."
Kelson and the entire golf program are excited about the impact these two could have on the program.
"We are delighted that Adam and Jay have decided to join our program in 2009." Kelson said. "We feel the addition of these two fine young men will lay a very solid foundation for our program for several years to come. These two signees, coupled with our verbal commitments for the 2010 class will all but solidify our scholarship needs until the 2012 signing class."
