The White team continued its recent dominance in the Orange and White meet with a 173-125 victory Friday. This event marks the first competition in the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
"We had a pretty interesting day," said men's head swimming coach John Trembley. "The White team had much more spirit and they brought an intensity to the competition."
Geoff Sanders, returning sophomore letterman, led the way for the White squad capturing victories in three events: 1650 freestyle, 150 butterfly, and the 300 freestyle.
"I think we should look at our team instead of highlighting individuals," said Sanders. "We saw what we could do today, and now we need to build on that through this week and through the rest of our season. Everyone stepped up today and it was a great all around team effort."
In his standout performance Sanders was aided by junior Jordan Walters and freshman diver Ryan Helms.
"The first time swimming in the new pool was nice," said Walters. "Overall I think the meet went really well and everyone swam pretty fast."
Helms had a standout performance in his first collegiate event and finished atop the leader board in the diving competition.
"I just got in the zone and had a great time," said Helms. "I am excited about the meet next week and to see how I progress through the year."
Last season's Mr. Clutch, Brad Craig, led the Orange team to a victory in the 200 medley relay, 150 I.M., 150 breaststroke, and had a second place finish in the 50 breaststroke.
"Brad Craig has made significant changes in his race strategy and how he has trained, as well," Trembley said. "I was very pleased to see him run some very nice technical races."
"I just came out ready to swim," Craig said, "I took every event seriously. I think the diving today was amazing and everyone swam very well."
Following the meet, Trembley noted a few areas for improvement including discipline on the diving boards and the team's level of intensity.
"For us to have the privilege of competing in this pool," Trembley said, "is something we should never take for granted. We have the College of the Cumberlands and the University of Louisville next week and we need to step up to the plate and compete at a more intense level."
