Tennessee sports a 3-1 record (2-1 Southeastern Conference) and No. 8 ranking in comparison to Northwestern???s 5-2 dual meet record this season. The last time UT swimmers raced was on Nov. 17 at the Hoosierland Open Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The Lady Vol divers were in Athens, Ga., earlier this week for the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout. The Wildcats most recently competed on Dec. 19 and produced wins over Florida Atlantic (120.5-116.5) and Denver (127-102) in a double-dual meet hosted by FAU. Both of NU???s losses were to ranked opponents in No. 19 Wisconsin and No. 23 Indiana.
??
The Big Orange???s only defeat this season came at the hands of two-time defending national champion Auburn on Nov. 10, 2007. Sophomore Michele King won a team-high three individual events en route to becoming the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week. Her 1:01.19 in the 100y breast obliterated the school record and marked the squad???s first NCAA automatic qualifying time of the year. In the 201-146 Auburn victory, eight different Lady Vols posted NCAA cuts and Zone Qualifying scores. In addition, in the team???s wins over Louisville, No. 17 Kentucky and South Carolina, several athletes recorded new personal-best times.
??
Today???s contest marks the 13th meeting between Tennessee and Northwestern. Each team is even at six wins and losses since their initial encounter on Nov. 19, 1995.?? UT took last year???s contest, 210-139, in Evanston, Ill., on Jan. 6. Tennessee???s Christine Magnuson won three individual events (all in NCAA provisional qualifying times) and helped three relay squads earn first-place finishes. Orange-clad swimmers took 13 of the 19 events contested that day. Highlighting the meet for the ???Cats was Kassia Shishkoff who won four events and was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and Collegeswimming.com and Swimming World Magazine National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week. NU???s last win over UT was on Jan. 8, 2005 (184-167).
