Tennessee senior Rubin Williams highlighted the track and field Vols??? performance Friday at the Penn State National Invitational in University Park, Pa., as he broke the meet record in the 60-meter dash.
Williams made a splash in his first competition of 2008 as the 12-time All-America broke the 60-meter dash meet record with a provisional-qualifying time of 6.65 during the semifinals. Based on marks entering this weekend, Williams??? time stands as the third-fastest in the nation this season. He did not run in the finals. He also recorded a provisional-qualifying time of 6.72 while earning the fastest time in the preliminaries.
Sophomore Evander Wells ran to a season-best time of 6.72 to place third in the finals after recording a then-season-best time of 6.73 during the preliminaries. Senior Matthieu Pritchett had his season-best performance in the semifinals, as he finished in 6.79 before placing sixth in the finals with a time of 6.80.
???This is the best Rubin has opened up at Tennessee,??? head coach Bill Webb said. ???He ran well and we elected not to run him in the finals so that he will be better prepared for the 200 and 4x400 relay tomorrow. Evander is having a great season, and Matthieu continues to run better throughout the season.???
Team captain Michael Hogue finished second in the pole vault with his 17-0 3/4 clearance. Freshman pole vaulter Joseph Berry took fifth in the event with a season-best vault of 16-4 3/4. Juniors Richard Wooten and Nick Panezich placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the weight throw. Wooten tied his personal-best mark that ranks fifth on Tennessee???s all-time performance list in the event with his throw of 62-8 3/4, and Panezich recorded a throw of 59-3 1/2.
???Hogue and Berry were extremely competitive in the pole vault competition,??? Webb said. ???Richard and Nick are both close to having big breakthroughs and we look forward to seeing them in the shot put tomorrow.???
Tennessee???s distance medley relay team of Axel Mostrag, Nathan Grace, Yarrick Kincaid and Andrew Dawson finished third in the first relay of the season in 9:56.56. Junior Denton Jones was Tennessee???s only distance competitor on Friday night, and he ran to a time of 15:04.68 to place 14th in the 5,000.
???There was a little bit of confusion at the end of the distance medley relay,??? Webb said. ???The top-three teams sprinted to the line with one lap to go thinking it was the end of the race, and then they had to reaccelerate and run again so that probably cost each team three to five seconds on their time.???
Kris Fant and Charlton Rolle each lowered their personal-best time considerably in the 60 hurdles. Fant recorded the fifth-fastest time of 8.03 during the preliminaries, bettering his previous personal-best time of 8.11, while Rolle lowered his personal-best time from 8.14 to 8.06 in the semifinals. Sophomore De???Lon Isom led the Vols with his 10th-place finish in the semifinals in 8.03 after recording the fourth-fastest preliminary time. Rolle also competed in the long jump, placing second in his flight and ninth overall with a 22-9 3/4 measurement.
Freshman Michael Ayers is the highest Vol after day one of the heptathlon, as his 2,877-point performance has him in sixth place with three events left. Team captain Jangy Addy is eighth with 2,545 points and junior Brad Holtz is 10th with 1,919. Addy began the heptathlon by blazing to victory in the 60 with a personal-best time of 6.86. The senior then fell to fourth overall after his leap of 22-1 1/2 in the long jump, but moved back into the overall lead by winning the shot put with a 52-10 3/4 measurement. Addy finished off his day with a no height in the high jump, which dropped him in the standings. Ayers ran to a 7.22 clocking in the 60 before long jumping 22-0 1/4. He recorded a mark of 40-7 in the shot put and then cleared a season-best height of 6-2 in the high jump. Holtz, in his first heptathlon, recorded a time of 7.52 in the 60 and earned a personal-best mark of 19-5 1/4 in the long jump before fouling in the shot put. He ended his day with a 5-11 1/2 high jump clearance.
???Jangy no-heighting was a disappointment, but that was my fault,??? Webb said. ???I should have started him at an earlier height, but we will continue tomorrow. Ayers had a good showing as a freshman, and he and Brad will be back to compete tomorrow.???
The Penn State National Invitational concludes Saturday with the heptathlon 60 hurdles beginning the proceedings at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Live results will be available at UTsports.com.
