Tennessee Aquatics Prepares for Final Day of Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ??? Members of the Tennessee Aquatics swim team entered in three races yesterday at the 2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. In addition, Tennessee rookies Morgan Farrell and Tricia Weaner represented their hometown swim clubs at the Indiana University Natatorium. Lady Vols of the past and present will be competing today on the final day of the national championships.
In the 200m freestyle, rising senior Christine Magnuson qualified for the ???C??? finals after placing 18th in the prelims with a time of 2:02.25. She was fourth in her finals heat in 2:01.40. Also in the prelims, rising junior Carly Mathes placed 54th by touching the wall in 2:04.73. Representing her hometown team, Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club, soon-to-be Lady Vol Morgan Farrell placed 114th in 2:08.84.
In the 100m breast, 2007 UT grad Tiffany Clay came in 38th with a time of 1:12.48. As a senior last year, Clay registered the school record in both the 100y (1:01.91) and 200y (2:11.87) breaststroke. Tennessee sophomore Jami Saffer joined Clay in the 100m breast and placed 93rd by touching the wall in 1:15.16.
Four swimmers affiliated with the Lady Vols competed in the 100m backstroke. UT backstroke record-holder Jacque Fessel came in at 32nd in 1:04.06. Fessel earned an Olympic Trial qualifying time in the event at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Sectional in Auburn, Ala., last month. Farrell placed 94th by touching the wall in 1:06.69 and rookie Tricia Weaner of West Shore YMCA club team was 79th in 1:06.00. Representing Tennessee Aquatics, Lady Vol Brittany Nauta was 99th with a time of 1:06.94.
Magnuson, Farrell and Tennessee senior Brooke Boncher will be competing in the 50m freestyle today. Clay and junior Carly Mathes will enter the 200ma IM. Results and more information can be found on www.usaswimming.org. Live results are on www.omegatiming.com.
