UT Sports Medicine Student Assistant Program

The University of Tennessee Sports Medicine Program offers multiple positions for university students to work as student assistants. Participation in the UT Sports Medicine Program as a student assistant is an educational experience that is hard to duplicate. As a participant of the program, the student receives the opportunity to work directly with staff athletic trainers, physical therapists, physicians, and athletes. Under staff supervision, the student will learn about every day operations, immediate care, and continual maintenance of the health of our athletes. Students in the program have the opportunity to observe injury evaluations and assist in the rehabilitation and treatment of athletic injuries. In addition, students will acquire a variety of skills that will be beneficial in many health care fields.
After spending time as a sports medicine student assistant our students typically pursue post-graduate education in physical therapy, medicine, and other allied health care professions. Our students often major in Exercise Science or biology but we accept applicants from all areas of study.

NATA Certification Requirements
Due to a change in NATABOC requirements, one must graduate from an accredited CAATE curriculum program in order to be eligible to take the certification examination. The UT student assistant program IS NOT AFFILIATED with any accredited program. For more information on universities with an accredited program, or on pursuing the profession of athletic training, please visit www.nata.org.
BEING A STUDENT ASSISTANT IN THE ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:Prior knowledge, experience, or training is not necessary. General knowledge of human anatomy and/or athletic injuries is helpful. First Aid and CPR certification will be required. If you've never been certified or aren't current, we will provide an opportunity for you to become certified.
WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED?
- Professional attire (UT shirt/Khaki pants or shorts)
- Professional conduct
- Punctuality
- Active Learning
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?
For observers - initially 10-15 hours per week working hours as assigned. Once hired, students are expected to commit a minimum of 15 hours per week. Attendance at a one hour per week in-service is required.
WILL I GET PAID?
There are limited funds to pay assistants. Priority is given to work study and returning students. It is not common for first year student assistants to get paid.

We are looking for students who are:
- Committed to assisting us in caring for our athletes
- Willing to treat the position as a priority in your academic schedule
- Eager to invest time and energy as an opportunity to learn about sports medicine

Application Process
Applications are accepted continuously throughout the year based on department demands.
- Applicants are required to interview with members of the sports medicine staff.
- Interviews will be conducted in early December for the students beginning Spring semester and April for the following academic year.
