Tennessee Golfers Excel Abroad
Knoxville, Tenn. ??? Charlie Ford, a rising senior on Tennessee's golf team, carded a four-day total of 287 to finish fifth in the Tillman Trophy July 15 at the Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, England. The Tillman Trophy is a prestigious amateur tournament in England.
Ford opened play with rounds of 71 and 74 on Saturday before firing back-to-back rounds of 71 on Sunday to finish 12 under par and just two strokes out of first place.
A native of Leicester, England, Ford???s top-five finish only adds to a stellar year for the Tennessee senior. He earned three top-10 finishes in 2006-07, including an eighth place finish at the SEC Championship. His 72.83 stroke average ranked third among Vols this season as well.
Ford will continue to play abroad this summer as a member of Great Britain???s team at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand, August 14-17.
WEISS NAMED ALL-AMERICA SCHOLAR
Former Tennessee golfer Tino Weiss was named an All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America and Cleveland Golf. Weiss was one of 100 Division I golfers to be named to the list.
Weiss played in 11 of 12 tournaments for the Vols during the 2006-07 season, posting a scoring average of 73.55 and earning two top-10 finishes. His best finish was a tie for second at the SEC Championship.
