Tennessee track athletes Jangy Addy, Jeff Day and Chris Helwick were named to the ESPN The Magazine All-District men's track and field/cross country team Thursday. All three athletes were named to the first team from District IV, which places them on the ballot for the Academic All-America team.
Addy earned first-team honors behind his 3.52 GPA in journalism/electronic media. The junior from Norcross, Ga., won the SEC championship in the heptathlon indoors with a personal-best score of 5,688 points that ranks fourth on Tennessee's all-time performance list in the event. He earned the conference championship in the decathlon outdoors with a personal-best score of 7,461. Addy was named to the 2006 USTFCCCA All-Academic team and is a three-time SEC Honor Roll selection. He was elected one of three team captains for this season.
Day, a senior from Springfield, Va., finished his collegiate career with a 3.90 GPA in sport management to make the first team. He ran the opening leg on Tennessee's SEC champion and school record-breaking distance medley relay teams and finished third in the championship section of the steeplechase at the Penn Relays to qualify for the Mideast Regional for the fourth straight year. Day was awarded co-Most Valuable Runner at the team's cross country banquet. He was named to the 2006 USTFCCCA All-Academic team and is a three-time SEC Honor Roll selection.
Helwick was awarded All-District honors for the second straight year and has a GPA of 3.72 in economics. The senior from Greeley, Colo., earned his sixth All-America certificate with his sixth-place finish in the heptathlon at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships. He won the decathlon at the Sea Ray Relays for the second consecutive year and broke his own meet record for a decathlon javelin throw with his mark of 213-8. Helwick was named to the 2006 USTFCCA All-Academic team and earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America acclaim. He was elected team captain for the second year before this season.
The athletes in contention for the Academic All-District team were nominated by their respective schools and voted on by sports information directors across the country, with athletic and academic excellence considered during the voting process. The Academic All-America team will be released later this month after the final round of voting takes place.
