KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 17th-ranked University of Tennessee women's track & field team won three events and charted four new NCAA regional qualifying marks Friday at the 41st Sea Ray Relays at UT's Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
The Lady Volunteers secured victories in the invitational hammer throw, 100-meter dash and 800-meter run and picked up fresh regional qualifiers in the 400, 800 and 1500 meters on a day when chilly winds and occasional sprinkles made for less than ideal conditions. The fourth and final day of the competition is slated to begin at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, with heavy rain and wind in the forecast for Senior Day. Lady Vols Katie Flaute (Dayton, Ohio), Felicia Guliford (Gallup, N.M.), Carly Matthews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Leslie Treherne (Chesapeake, Va.) are slated to be recognized at noon.
On Friday morning, junior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) unleashed her second school-record and regional-qualifying performance in as many weeks to claim the first Sea Ray Relays victory ever in the hammer throw by a Lady Vol. Dickenson stretched the tape to 198 feet, three inches, 12th best in the NCAA ranks this season, to hold off unattached runner-up Krystal Smith, who had a toss of 196-8. The previous UT record was Dickenson's fling of 194-5 last weekend at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Prior to that, Ariel Brooks' 2005 mark of 189-6 was the standard.
Freshman Lynne Layne also earned herself the title of Sea Rays champion, as the product of New Rochelle, N.Y., zipped down the straightaway in a career-best time of 11.62 seconds to win the 100m dash. That clocking was an improvement over her previous NCAA regional qualifying mark of 11.67, which she posted on March 23 at the Wake Forest Open. Layne's triumph gives the home team two 100m titles in the past three seasons, along with Toyin Olupona's title in 2004.
Fellow rookie Rose-Anne Galligan (County Kildare, Ireland) chipped in Tennessee's third victory of the day, as she circled the oval twice in a career-best 2:08.13 to win the 800 meters in her outdoor season debut at that distance. Already qualified for regionals in the 1500m, Galligan's time in the 800 made the regional cut today, as did Treherne's 2:09.40 readout, which was good for seventh place.
In the 1500 meters, sophomore Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) turned in a season-best and regional improvement of 4:20.73 to place fourth, while classmate Rolanda Bell (Laurelton, N.Y.) produced the first NCAA qualifying time of her career, a PR of 4:26.69 that left her in 11th position today out of 46 contestants.
In the 400 meters, junior LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) came through in her season debut at that distance, a 53.84 output that was good for sixth place and qualification into the NCAA Mideast Regional. Meanwhile, at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Friday night, sophomore Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.) rustled up a regional mark of 16:45.65 in the 5000 meters and placed eighth out of 39 runners. That gives Tennessee 14 entries in nine different events for the regional meet, which will be held in Columbia, Mo., on May 25-26.
"We had a good day," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said from the West Coast, where he had just watched Van Horn run. "Shanna continues to improve each meet, and it was nice to see her raise the school record yet again. To have Lynne Layne also run a personal best in the 100m also was exciting.
"I was pleased to hear that Rose-Anne won the 800 meters with a personal best and regional mark that Sarah lowered her regional mark in the 1500m and Rolanda had a great PR and qualifying time. You combine those with Katie hitting the 5K standard tonight and the marks we had already, and we're coming along nicely. Having athletes getting PRs in the throws, distances and sprints is putting us in a good position for when it is time to perform."
In the 100m hurdles, Tennessee sophomores Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) and Pavi'Elle "Tiki" James (Miami, Fla.) registered fifth and sixth place finishes, respectively. Law ran 13.75, while James crossed the line in 13.99. Both had previously qualified for the regional meet.
Elsewhere at Sea Rays, freshman Nia Ali (Philadelphia, Pa.) placed 10th in the high jump with a leap of 5-5, while junior Amara McKell (Nashville, Tenn.) was 11th in the javelin at 115-2.
