KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ??? The 12th-ranked University of Tennessee swimming and diving team (3-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) will travel to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend to take part in the Hoosierland Open Invitational, hosted by Indiana University. The Lady Vol diving squad will not be joining the swimmers in the three-day meet which is scheduled to take place from Thurs., Nov. 15 - Sat., Nov. 17. ???This meet gives us a chance to compete against some very good teams that we don't usually get to see,??? head swimming coach Matt Kredich said. ???California, Penn State, and Indiana are all strong programs with athletes who will be competing for NCAA Championships in several events in March, so we expect to see our athletes respond to the challenge of the weekend with some great performances.???
The competition will be held in championship format with the preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. each day. The top 16 performers will then swim in the finals which are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on Thursday and Friday, and immediately after the 1650y free on Saturday. All times are Eastern.
???We are really excited to swim in our first trials and finals format meet of the year,??? Kredich said. ???Each person will get a lot of swims this weekend, and the meet will give us a chance to look at some new events for some of our athletes. We have some very versatile swimmers who need to begin to narrow their focus towards their best three events for the Southeastern Conference Championships.???
Tennessee is coming off a 146-201 loss to No.1 Auburn, on Nov. 10, in Auburn, Ala. The Orange and White took eight events from the two-time defending national champion Tigers, including two relays and three individual wins from sophomore Michele King (50y and 100y free, and 100y breast). Senior Christine Magnuson finished first in the 100y fly, while Lauren LeRoy and Vicky Linnell split the diving contests. Five different UT swimmers posted 15 NCAA provisional cuts, along with King???s automatic qualifying (and school record-setting) time in the 100y breast.
