TENNESSEE'S DISTANCE MEDLEY TEAM WINS AT GLADSTEIN INVITATIONAL

Tennessee men's track and field athletes concluded action at two different meets Saturday. Tennessee won the distance medley relay at the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., while Jangy Addy earned a provisional-qualifying score in the heptathlon at the JRF Multi-Event Challenge in Clemson, S.C.
"Overall we had good competition (in Indiana)," distance coach George Watts said. "The mile guys bounced back after a difficult race (Friday) to perform well in the distance medley relay. Day led off in 2:58.8, which put us in the lead and nobody really challenged us from there. I was very proud of our effort in the event, especially since the other three guys had to run without anybody pushing them.
The Vols distance medley relay team of Day, Andrew Dawson, Yarrick Kincaid and Tyler DeVault won the event and just missed a provisional-qualifying time as the quartet stopped the clock at 9:46.57, less than one second away from the NCAA standard. Following the distance medley, Kincaid finished third in his first 800 of the season with a time of 1:54.09. Dawson, a junior transfer from Central Arizona College, finished the race in 1:54.25 and placed fourth.
Addy finished fourth, just 59 points behind the winner, with a provisional-qualifying and personal-best score of 5,421 points. That score improves his standing in sixth place on the Vols' all-time list in the heptathlon.
Addy began the second day of the heptathlon by extending his first-day lead with a win in the 60 hurdles. His time of 7.98 was less than a second slower than his provisional-qualifying converted 55 hurdles time of 7.89c from the Virginia Tech Invitational. The competition then moved on to the pole vault, where the junior from Norcross, Ga., cleared the bar at a personal-best height of 13-3 1/2. Addy finished the seven-event, two-day challenge with a 3:00.70 clocking in the 1,000.
"Jangy had a good overall performance this weekend," head coach Bill Webb said. "His score will probably get him into the NCAA meet, but he has at least 100-to-150 points that he can pick up in the event. I think we are in good shape, and he came out healthy so I count this as a successful trip.
Tennessee will be back in action next weekend with a full squad traveling to New York to compete in the historic Armory Collegiate Invitational.
