Irvine, Calif. -Lady Vols Megan Tomes, Tiffany Clay, Christine Magnuson and Carly Mathes ended the ConocoPhillips USA National Championships on Saturday by claiming 11th in the 400m IM Relay event. The foursome crossed the finish line in 4:19.12, just .28 seconds behind Nashville Aquatics, to keep them out of the top-ten. The California Aquatics squad of Olympian Natalie Coughlin, Jessica Hardy, Erin Reilly and Emily Silver took top honors with a time of 4:03.32.
The Lady Vols did well in Irvine, competing in ten events against some of the nation's best swimmers including, but not limited to, Olympians Natalie Coughlin, Rachel Komisarz, Katie Hoff and Hayley Peirsol. Head coach Matt Kredich sent five of his athletes to battle for spots on USA rosters at five different international events. Tennessee's best finish came on the third day when Magnuson, Mathes, Tomes and Sarah McCall placed ninth in the 800m freestyle relay.
While none of the Orange and White's finest made their way onto the 2006 Pan Pacific roster, the line-ups for the four other international meets in 2007 are still being decided.
