NGCA RANKS LADY VOLS NINTH IN ACADEMICS

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The UT women's golf team earned the ninth-highest grade point average in the country, according to an announcement released by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). In addition to finishing the season with a ninth-place national ranking and a 13th-place finish in the NCAA Championships, the team excelled in the classroom by posting an average of 3.592 GPA. The University of South Carolina topped the NGCA list for the second year in a row with a 3.677.
Seniors Golda Johansson and Violeta Retamoza, junior Holly Cantwell, and sophomores Jennifer Davis and Marci Turner were also honored by the Southeastern Conference after being named to the spring SEC Academic Honor Roll. UT's lone 2005-06 freshman, Nicole Smith, was chosen to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.
Tennessee excelled on the links in the 2005-06 season as sophomore Marci Turner was honored by the NGCA as a second-team All-American. The Tompkinsville, Ky. native also earned a spot on the NGCA All-American Scholar team. Turner led the Big Orange to victory in three tournaments this season by earning medalist honors and was named National Player of the Week by Golfweek on three occasions.
The upcoming 2006-07 season holds infinite possibilities for head coach Judi Pavon's squad as the Orange and White will return four of its letterwinners while adding five newcomers.
