April 22, 2006
Yarrick Kincaid and Drew Brunson picked up wins for the Tennessee men's track and field team Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. Kincaid won the 800 meters, while Brunson took top honors in the high jump. As a team, Tennessee grabbed four season-best marks, two personal-best marks and one new regional-qualifying time with only 15 athletes competing.
"We just had a few people competing this weekend," head coach Bill Webb said. "We had two guys on our 4x100 team that had never carried the baton on the relay, but we wanted to get Matthieu Pritchett and Jonathan Wade a chance to work on their handoff. Now we will turn our attention to getting ready for the Penn Relays next weekend."
Kincaid won the 800 with a personal-best and regional-qualifying time of 1:49.89. Tennessee now has 19 performances qualified for the Mideast regional meet, which will be held May 26-27 at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Brunson won the high jump with a season-best clearance of 6 feet, 9 3/4 inches but had a narrow miss on his attempt at seven feet.
Kenny Schappert joined Kincaid in the 800 and finished fourth with a time of 1:51.03. In action late Friday night, Dusty Miller finished second in the 1,500 with a season-best time of 3:51.97, while Chris Platt finished third with his own season-best time of 3:53.96.
Sophomore Akeem Hardnett finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 47-6 1/2. Senior Damond Campbell finished sixth in the 400 with a season-best clocking of 53.63. Carjay Lyles finished 11th in 55.44. Tennessee's 4x100 relay team of Pritchett, Wade, Campbell and Lyles finished ninth with a time of 41.78. The 4x100 was Wade's first track event of the season after completing spring practicing with the Vols' football team.
Senior co-captain Jim Sexton finished fourth in the hammer throw with a measurement of 190-2, while freshman Nick Panezich unleashed a personal-best throw of 175-7. Tim Nguyen finished seventh with a throw of 170-0 and Richard Wooten placed eighth with the same 170-0 measurement. Panezich took fifth in the discus with a throw of 156-1. Wooten tossed the shot put 53-2 1/4 to finish fourth, and Panezich, the only Vol thrower to compete in three events, finished his busy day by tying for ninth with a 49-3 effort. Late Friday night, Anthony Immediate made his season debut and finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 170-9.
Next week, Tennessee will travel to Philadelphia to compete in the Penn Relays, held at historic Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
