The Tennessee men's golf team begins the hunt for its third SEC championship Friday as the 2006 SEC Championships get underway. The championship runs Friday through Sunday and takes place at the Sea Island Golf Club, a par-70, 6,898- yard course, in St. Simon Island, Ga.
Tennessee enters this year's SEC tournament fielding a young team. In the lineup for the Big Orange are three sophomores, one freshman and a junior, only one of which has experience at Sea Island.
"I know we're going deeper in our lineup than we probably ever have to field our team," head coach Jim Kelson said. "I don't think there are a lot of people giving us much of a chance at all to do anything in this tournament, or anything in the rest of the year given everything that's happened. As a coaching staff, we still believe in these kids a lot because this team really has a lot of character and that means something."
Sophomore Jonathan Mount holds the No. 1 position for Tennessee. Mount leads the team in scoring average with a 72.40 and has fired 11 rounds of par-or-better on the season.
Following at the No. 2 position is Georgia native Ben Spickard, who has been the Vols most dependable golfer this spring, playing in every round of every tournament.
Sophomore Charlie Ford mans the No. 3 position. At the 2005 SEC Championships, Ford fired an 81-81-75--237 to finish in a tie for 51st. He is the only golfer in the Tennessee lineup to compete at last year's championships.
Freshman Chris Paisley follows in the No.4 position. Paisley owns one top-10 finish this season and has a scoring average of 74.53.
Lone junior Tino Weiss rounds out the Volunteer lineup. This marks his first action since he tied for 45th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships Feb. 5-7.
Competition begins Friday at 8 a.m. Eastern time. Teams play 18 holes each day. Live results can be found at www.golfstat.com or www.bamagolf.com.
