The Tennessee men's track and field team opened the outdoor season Saturday at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla., with two regional qualifiers and three lifetime-best performances. Drew Brunson and co-captain Jim Sexton each took silver in the 110-meter hurdles and hammer throw, respectively, to become the first two Volunteers to qualify for the Mideast regional outdoor meet.
"We had limited participation today," head coach Bill Webb said. "None of the guys that went to indoor nationals competed, and we held some more guys out. It was a hot, long day with the hammer throw starting at 9 a.m., which made for a 10-hour day out on the track. We had a few lifetime bests today and now we will go back, review the film, get some rest and then begin training for the Disney meet.
The Vols' throwing corps gave Webb plenty to be happy about. Sexton provided the biggest highlight by earning a regional qualifier in the hammer throw with a toss of 195 feet, 3 inches to finish second. Freshmen Nick Panezich and Richard Wooten finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the hammer. Panezich recorded a throw of 175-3 while Wooten's throw measured 175-0. Senior Tim Nguyen tossed the hammer 170-0 to finish sixth and set a personal-best mark, breaking his old mark by three and a half feet.
Sexton also led the Vols in the discus with a throw of 157-2, good for fourth place. Panezich finished fifth with a 155-1 toss. Decathletes Jangy Addy and Alex Dobranowski finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with throws of 145-8 and 143-6. Wooten was the top scorer for the Big Orange in the shot put, measuring 54-1 with his best effort. Addy finished sixth with a personal-best mark of 50-9 1/4, while Panezich finished eighth with a 49-11 1/4 throw.
Brunson provided the Vols with a second regional-qualifying performance with his time of 14.06 seconds in the 110 hurdles. Damond Campbell finished ninth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.66. Campbell also ran the 400 hurdles, finishing sixth and clocking in at 54.94. Matthieu Pritchett ran the 200 in 21.71 to cross the finish line fifth. In the 4x400 relay, Jacob Dennis, Kenny Schappert, Yarrick Kincaid and Dusty Miller combined to finish fourth with a time of 3:18.04.
The Vols sent a scrappy bunch to the starting line for the 4x100 relay. With projected member Aries Merritt sitting out the meet to rest after his NCAA indoor championship in the 60 hurdles and Jonathan Wade not with the team because of spring football practice, Akeem Hardnett and Carjay Lyles stepped in to run with Pritchett and Brunson. Hardnett, Pritchett, Brunson and Lyles rounded the track in 42.57 for an eighth-place finish.
Schappert finished third in the 800 with a 1:52.07 time. Miller provided the third personal best on the day with his fifth-place, 1:53.42 effort. Lyles, in his first career 800, won his heat and finished 23rd overall with a time of 2:01.53. The Vol trio finished behind Texas' Ryan Ponsonby, who set a Hurricane Invitational record with a 1:50.51 clocking. Steve Tobin and Ed Davis almost ran to a tie in the 1,500, finishing one-hundredth of a second apart. Tobin finished ninth in 4:00.17 while Davis finished 10th in 4:00.18. Kincaid and Matthew Lapp also ran the 1,500, crossing the finish line in 16th and 23rd, respectively.
Freshman Brad Holtz was the only Tennessee competitor in the pole vault, finishing fifth with a vault of 15-1. Senior Eric Pierce represented the only orange in the long jump, and finished fifth with a jump of 22-2 1/4. Knoxville native and Halls High School graduate Chris Wilson, normally a high jumper, finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 42-9 3/4.
The Volunteers will stay in Miami for the next two days and then will travel 250 miles north on I-95 and the Florida Turnpike to Clermont, Fla., where the team will stay the rest of the week. Tennessee will be back on the track competitively at the Walt Disney Invitational, held at Disney's Wide World of Sports, which begins with the decathlon Wednesday and runs through Saturday.
