Tennessee sophomore Ryan Rincon narrowly missed the cut for the NCAA championships with a seventh-place finish on the platform Sunday at the NCAA Zone B diving qualifier in Lexington, Ky.
Evan Stowers of Georgia Tech edged Rincon for the final spot for the NCAA championships. Stowers finished sixth with 630.50. Rincon finished with 554.50. Steve Segerlin of Auburn won with 791.10. Four of the top five divers on platform were from the Southeastern Conference.
"Ryan gave a good effort but unfortunately it was not enough," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He just came up a little shy of going to the big dance. I am certainly proud of Ryan and how he bounced back Sunday after struggling this weekend. Hopefully he will learn a lot from this experience and build off of it."
Thirteen qualifying spots will be filled from Zone B, the most of any of the five zones. Qualifying numbers are determined based on the previous results from the NCAA championships.
Divers earning an automatic spot on any board also qualify on other boards if they compete in those events at the zone qualifier.
Next up for Tennessee Aquatics is the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships March 23-25 in Atlanta.
