KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 2006 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships are officially sold out, the UT Athletics Department announced. The event, which was deemed a sellout on Tuesday, Feb. 7, will take place on Feb. 15-18 at the UT Student Aquatic Center. Parking for spectators who have secured tickets to the event is located on Todd Helton Drive in lots F1, F2, F3 and F4.
The UT Student Aquatic Center is no stranger to major events, as there have been no fewer than eight major regional or national events since its opening in 1967. The venue has played host to seven previous SEC Championships (1968, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1986, 1988 and 1996) as well as the 1973 NCAA Championships and the groundbreaking dual meet between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1982.
In addition, the SAC housed U.S. Olympic training in 1972, 1980 and 1996. An enthusiastic crowd numbering in the thousands turned out in the summer of 1996 for an open workout, as the U.S. men's and women's Olympic squads prepared for the Atlanta Games. After reviewing five prospective facilities, the Site Selection Committee of the Olympic International Division chose UT's facility on the basis of environment, total facilities and proximity to Atlanta.
The 2006 SEC Championships will serve as the final major meet held in the SAC, as groundbreaking for a new stateof- the-art venue, the Allan Jones Aquatic Center, took place on Oct. 29, 2005. Completion is targeted for December 2007.
