KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Day one of the Bulldog Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium, site of the 2006 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, concluded Saturday afternoon. Abbi Terveer and Sam Maccherola turned in solid efforts, almost qualifying for the national meet in the process.
In the 50y freestyle, Terveer, from Lima, Ohio, churned out a season-best 23.64, which is only .08 shy of the "B" cut standard. The clocking improves upon her previous season best, which came during the 2006 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The senior will have another crack at qualifying for the national meet when she swims the lead-off leg of the 200y freestyle relay on Sunday.
Maccherola, a native of Mount Airy, Md., then hit the water for the 200y freestyle. The freshman performed admirably by cranking out a lifetime best 1:50.59, which lifted her to the top of the field.
The last-chance meet in Athens, Ga., will wrap up on Sunday.
