December 02, 2006 | Men's Track
Dec. 2, 2006
The Tennessee men's track and field team finished its fall training season Saturday at the Clemson Opener in Clemson, S.C. Richard Wooten extended his personal-record in the 35-lb. weight throw on the way to a win in the event.
"We got a look at a bunch of people in some events," head coach Bill Webb said. "We made progress and saw where we were after fall training. We will go back and look at some film of this meet. The people we brought to Clemson performed about how we expected them to. At this point in time we were focused on getting little things down, like steps in the jumps.
Wooten recorded a measurement of 61 feet, 11 3/4 inches in the weight throw Friday night to better his previous personal-best mark of 60-5, which stands as the Tennessee freshman record, by more than a foot. Nick Panezich finished eighth in the event with his throw of 53-11. Wooten and Panezich also competed in the shot put Saturday morning. Wooten placed second with his 55-3 1/2 measurement while Panezich recorded a mark of 49-10 1/2 to finish third.
Michael Hogue finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 16-6 3/4.
Andy Lane, who transferred to Tennessee from Clemson in 2003, also cleared 16-6 3/4 and finished third. Sophomore Brad Holtz opened his indoor season by clearing the bar at 15-1 to place sixth.
Freshman Evander Wells finished third in the 60-meter dash finals with his time of 6.82 seconds after qualifying with the second-best time of 6.78.
Matthieu Pritchett crossed the finish line in 6.86 to finish fifth and Kyle Stevenson finished sixth in 6.88. Pritchett and Stevenson qualified third and 11th, respectively.
DeLon Isom finished fifth in his first collegiate final, stopping the clock at 8.21 in the 60 hurdles. Carjay Lyles recorded a time of 8.75 after clipping a hurdle and finished 14th. Damond Campbell led the Vols in the preliminaries, finishing sixth with a time of 8.05, but did not compete in the finals.
Sophomore James Jones and redshirt freshman Brenard Wilson tied for fifth in the high jump. Both athletes leaped over the bar at 6-6 3/4.
Freshman John Hewitt finished 10th in the 400 with his time of 50.21. Lyles finished his busy weekend with a time of 52.11 in his third event of the weekend and placed 41st. Friday night, Lyles finished 27th in the long jump with a 19-8 3/4 measurement.
The Vols will now break for exams and the holidays before returning to campus Jan. 3. Tennessee will take to the track again Jan. 6 at the Indiana All-Comers meet in Bloomington, Ind.
