The 11th-ranked Tennessee men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss Saturday, 133-110, against the 12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
"In a coin-toss meet it appeared they were ready and wanted the win more than we did," UT head coach John Trembley said.
The youthful Vols competed until the end with nice performances throughout the day.
Opening up the meet with a win was the 400 medley relay squad of Michael Wolfe, Barry Murphy, Andrew Engle and Zac Samland in 3:19.63.
Senior captains Bryan Goldberg and Tyler Gustafson took care of business in the 200 freestyle, taking the top two spots. Goldberg won in 1:39.30 with Gustafson on his heels in second in 1:39.46. British freshman Andrew Thirlwell finished fourth in 1:41.08.
Casey Dauw, the third senior captain along with Goldberg and Gustafson, won the 200 individual medley in 1:49.77. Wolfe followed in second in 1:50.56.
Wolfe continued a strong day with a win in the 200 backstroke in 1:47.92. Freshman Nolan Morrell finished second in 1:50.68.
Morrell also finished third in the 1,000 free in 9:23.42 with teammate Stephen Fortney in fourth in 9:30.07.
Senior Kiel Huston finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.80.
"We had some nice efforts out of Michael Wolfe, Nolan Morrell, Greg Houchin, Stephen Fortney and especially Kiel Huston," Trembley added.
Gustafson (45.38) and sophomore Octavio Alesi (45.72) took second and third in the 100 free, respectively. Alesi also finished second in the 50 free in 20.61.
"Our sprinters were a little off the mark today, although Jeff Sudbury swam some pretty fine races," Trembley said.
The next meet for the Vols is Saturday at home against the sixth-ranked Florida Gators at the UT Student Aquatic Center.
