KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee has released the schedule for the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. This year's league meet will be hosted at the UT Student Aquatic Center (SAC) from Feb. 15-18.
The UT Student Aquatic Center was financed and constructed through the usage of student funds in 1967. It is no stranger to major events, as there have been no fewer than eight major regional or national events since its opening. The venue has played host to seven previous SEC Championships (1968, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1986, 1988 and 1996), as well as the 1973 NCAA Championships and the groundbreaking dual meet between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1982.
In addition, the SAC housed U.S. Olympic training in 1972, 1980 and 1996. An enthusiastic crowd numbering in the thousands turned out in the summer of 1996 for an open workout, as the U.S. men's and women's Olympic squads prepared for the Atlanta Games. After reviewing five prospective facilities, the Site Selection Committee of the Olympic International Division selected UT's facility on the basis of environment, total facilities and proximity to Atlanta.
The 2006 SEC Championships will serve as the final major meet held in the SAC, as groundbreaking for a new state-of-the-art venue, the Allan Jones Aquatic Center, took place on Oct. 29, 2005. Completion date is targeted for December 2007.
During the past few decades, the SEC has been a consistent force in swimming and diving. In 2005, Auburn brought home the NCAA men's championship, while Georgia claimed the women's title. Individually, SEC student-athletes captured 28 individual crowns. Moreover, since 1982, league teams have finished in the NCAA top 10 a combined 61 times.
Tickets are available by calling the UT ticket office at 865-656-1200. For adults, an all-sessions pass may be purchased for $50, while championship single-session passes are $18 and prelim single-session tickets are $12. Youth tickets, for those younger than 18, are $20 for an all-session pass, with championship single-session passes set at $8 and prelim single-session passes available for $5.
