WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA -- The string of impressive feats by the University of Tennessee women's track & field team continued Friday night, as Lady Vol rookies Cleo Tyson and Shanna Dickenson represented their country and school in impressive fashion at the 2005 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships.
Competing at University of Windsor Stadium, Tyson ran away with the 100-meter dash title and Dickenson secured a second-place outcome in the discus throw, contributing to a very successful day for Team USA.
After breezing to the fastest time of the 100-meter dash prelims in 11.35 and winning heat one with a reading that was just off the meet record of 11.34, Tyson came back later in the evening to record an 11.52 clocking and triumph easily in the final. Also the U.S. junior champion in the 100 and 200 meters in June, Tyson handily claimed victory on this night over runner-up Schillonie Calvert of Jamaica, who hit the tape well back at 11.80. The finalists were running into a head wind of 1.8 meters per second.
As for Dickenson, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native rode a first-attempt fling of 163 feet to runner-up distinction. The U.S. champion, who led the competition until the fifth round of throws, finished second behind Alvarez Rodriguez of Cuba, whose effort of 163 feet, seven inches was good for top honors.
While Dickenson can pack away her uniform and start thinking about her sophomore collegiate season, Tyson will keep her focus in Windsor, as the Huntsville, Texas, product is among those in the 4x100m relay pool for the American squad. That event will be contested Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
Lady Vol signee Sarah Bowman, a native of Warrenton, Va., and graduate of Fauquier High School, will also run on Sunday, taking part in the 1500-meter final at 7:10 p.m. ET. She leads the field with a seed time of 4:18.48, which she produced in winning that event at the USATF Junior Championships.
Pan Am Juniors, which are held every two years, feature around 600 athletes, age 19 and under, from 45 different countries.
