KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- Five members of the Lady Vol swimming and diving program have been named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar-Athlete Teams. Christine Magnuson and Julia Stowers were honored as first-squad members while Betsy Brockman, Lauren LeRoy and Abbi Terveer were honorable-mention selections. Additionally, as a result of the entire squad's outstanding performance in the classroom, Tennessee was named a scholar-athlete team.
"I'm really impressed with the academic performance of the team as a whole last semester," Head Coach Matt Kredich said. "Christine Magnuson and Julia Stowers are part of a very elite group to have scored at NCAA's and achieved such a high GPA, while Abbi Terveer, Lauren LeRoy, and Betsy Brockman achieved NCAA "B" cuts and had such great success academically as well. This recognition is a tribute to the outstanding people in the Thornton Center, the values of the leadership of the team last year, and of course the individual student-athletes who have such a high standard of excellence in the classroom. We're all proud of these women for the way they have represented the Lady Vols and the University of Tennessee in the classroom and in the pool."
Magnuson, a Tinley Park, Ill., native led the way with an outstanding 4.0 GPA with a major in exercise science. Stowers is pursuing a degree in sociology and achieved an impressive 3.75 GPA. The distinction wraps up an outstanding year for the pair as both earned All-America laurels for their performances at the 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Brockman and Terveer each recorded stellar GPAs of 3.88. Brockman is a double major in political science and sociology while Terveer is majoring in psychology. LeRoy finished with a notable 3.75 GPA with a major in exercise science.
As a team, the Orange and White earned a GPA of 3.26 and placed among the top 40 nationally.
