The Tennessee men's swimming team had a strong showing at the 2005 Speedo Champions Series Southern Zone Eastern Championship Meet this past weekend in Auburn, Ala., at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
"I am particulary impressed with what we did considering we weren't shaved for this meet," UT head coach John Trembley said. "The guys have been training hard all summer and spring. They are racing well and are excited about the upcoming American National Championships."
Rising sophomore Octavio Alesi led the way for the Vol contingent with two individual wins. Alesi won the 100-meter butterfly in 53.77. The time broke the all-time Vol record for the 100-meter fly.
Alesi also brought home a win in the 100-meter freestyle in 50.50 which is second all-time in Vol history.
Rising senior and co-captain Tyler Gustafson finished second behind Alesi in the 100 free in 51.20.
Brad Boswell finished second in the 100 back in 57.90. The time was good enough to earn him a qualifying spot at the Olympic Trials.
Former Vol Andrew Bree won the 100 breast in 1:04.60.
Next up for Tennessee is the American National Championships August 3-8.
Incoming freshmen Barry Murphy and Andrew Thirlwell will be competing in world-renowned events also as they prepare to begin their collegiate careers at Tennessee.
