Tennessee landed seven players on the 11-man NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team after sweeping through regional play with victories over Austin Peay, Winthrop and Wichita State. Freshman pitcher James Adkins was named the tournament's most outstanding player after striking out 15 and scattering four hits in a complete-game win over Winthrop Saturday night.
The Vols' other representatives on the All-Tournament Team included catcher J.P. Arencibia, shortstop Eric King, third baseman Chase Headley, outfielder Julio Borbon, outfielder Josh Alley and designated hitter Rob Fitzgerald.
Headley led the Vols' offensive efforts throughout the regional, batting .545 with four runs scored, six hits, three RBIs and one home run. He boasted an impressive 1.273 slugging percentage and was perfect defensively.
King was also flawless defensively, recording eight assists and five putouts while hitting .333 with five hits and two RBIs.
Arencibia drove in three runs for UT and also recorded his first career triple.
Borbon's weekend was highlighted by a solid performance against Winthrop Saturday night, during which he went 4-for-4 and tallied the game-winning RBI.
Alley ranked second on the club with a .455 average at the plate. His five RBIs led the team during the regional.
Fitzgerald broke loose during Sunday's victory over Wichita State. The senior went 4-for-6 with a homer and three runs scored. He totaled five hits with an .818 slugging percentage through UT's three games.
The Knoxville Regional's All-Tournament team was selected by the media during Sunday's championship game. First baseman Tyler Hill, second baseman Damon Sublett and outfielder Phil Napolitan were Wichita State's representatives, while pitcher Kevin Slowey was the lone honoree from Winthrop. No Austin Peay players were named to the All-Tournament Team.
TENNESSEE'S NCAA SUPER REGIONAL OPPONENT TO BE DECIDED MONDAY
The Tennessee baseball team's opponent for next weekend's 2005 NCAA Super Regional won't be determined until Monday night. Playing out of the loser's bracket, South Carolina defeated national No. 2 seed Georgia Tech 8-3 Sunday in a game that forced a winner-take-all contest at Tech's Russ Chandler Stadium Monday at 6 p.m. ET.
The winner of Monday night's regional championship game faces Tennessee in an NCAA Super Regional (a best-of-three series) that runs Friday through Sunday. Since it is one of the top-eight national seeds, Georgia Tech would host the Super Regional if it advances past South Carolina Monday. However, a win by the Gamecocks would likely translate into a second straight weekend at home for the Vols.
Tennessee baseball season-ticket holders will receive Super Regional ticket-order priority through Tues., June 7. For ticket information -- and for confirmation of the Super Regional site -- log on to UTsports.com or call the UT Ticket Office at (865) 656-1200.
