The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team has added another Tennessean to its list of incomers for the 2004-05 season with the signing of Greg Houchin of Nashville, Tenn.
"I have watched him grow as a young swimmer for many years and am well aware of his talents," UT head coach John Trembley said. "He is an outstanding scholar, and my sense is that Greg has always felt a warm spot in his heart for the Big Orange because he is a Tennessean. It is going to awesome having him here as a part of this program.
"Greg swims for John Morse of Nashville Aquatic Club, and coach Morse has expressed to us that Greg is very motivated, driven and competitive and will be an incredible competitor in the Southeastern Conference," Trembley added.
He won the 2005 Tennessee State Championship in the 200 butterfly in 1:49.12 while swimming for Martin Luther King High School. The time also earned him a USA National Championships qualifying spot.
"Houchin has family ties in Knoxville with his grandmother, Eleanor Bellomy, who lives in Knoxville," Trembley said. "His father, Tom, and mother, Barbara, have been wonderful leaders in the swimming community in East Tennessee for many years. His older brother Lee looked at Tennessee and is now competing for Indiana, doing quite well.
His top times include 50.09 in the 100 butterfly and 1:49.12 in the 200 fly.
Houchin's signing adds to an impressive 2005 class already set in place. The talented group of incomers includes Peter Baer (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills HS), Stanley Czarnecki (Denver, Penn./Coacalico HS), James Dabney (Charlotte, N.C./Providence HS), Jeff Inman (Athens/McMinn County HS), Nolan Morrell (Bend, Ore.), Barry Murphy (Dublin, Ireland), Michael Russo (Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS), Zachary Samland (Omaha, Neb./Westside HS), Burkley Showe (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS), Jeffrey Sudbury (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow HS), Andrew Thirlwell (New Castle, England/St. Thomas Moore HS) and Scott Wherry (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins HS).
