KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - With hopes of earning an NCAA Championship bid for the third consecutive season, the Tennessee Lady Vol rowing team will compete at the Ninth-Annual Central/South Region Sprints, sponsored by Aramark, on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15. The event will feature 21 teams from the Central and South regions, including eight squads ranked in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Varsity Eight Poll. Opening heats are scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the semifinals beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday's finals are slated to start at 9 a.m. and should conclude by noon.
The Lady Vols will be represented by six crews, as the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, open four and the first and second novice eight shells will all take to the water this weekend.
The Open 4+ will race at 9:20 a.m., the first Novice 8+ at 9:50 a.m., followed by the first Varsity 4+ at 10:20 a.m., the second Varsity 8+ at 10:40 a.m. and the first Varsity 8+ at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, while the second Novice 8+ will race at 9:50 a.m. on Sunday.
UT enters the competition with the nation's 11th-ranked varsity eight shell but will be challenged by the strongest field in the event's history. Other ranked crews competing in the event include No. 3 Michigan State, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 7 Michigan, No. 9 Virginia, No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Minnesota and No. 20 Louisville. The remainder of the field includes Cincinnati, Clemson, Duke, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, Notre Dame, SMU and Texas.
Last season, Virginia claimed the Central/South Region Sprints title as well as the South Region Crown with 404 points, followed by Ohio State (391), Wisconsin (363), Michigan (362), Michigan State (303) to round out the top five. Tennessee (295) and Notre Dame finished in a sixth-place tie, which was the Big Orange's second-consecutive sixth-place finish and ranks as the best finish at the Sprints in the program history.
