Andrew Thirlwell Inks With Swim Vols

The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team added a new member Wednesday with the addition of Andrew Thirlwell of Newcastle, England.
"Andrew Thirlwell is one of the finest prospects available in the world," UT head coach John Trembley said. "He will bring to Tennessee a blend of strong academics, international experience and unbelievable talent. He is clearly one of the crown jewels in this unbelievable class which will arrive at Tennessee in August 2005.
Thirlwell is the British junior record holder with a 2:06.48 in the 200-meter individual medley.
He also finished 13th in the 100-meter butterfly in 56.78 at the 2005 British Swimming Championships. In 2002 at the British Youth National Championships, Thirlwell won the silver medal in the 200-meter I.M. in 2:10.00 and bronze in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:55.66.
His short-course meter personal bests include: 50.70 in the 100 free and 1:47.90 in the 200 free. On long-course meter his top times are 51.80 in the 100 free, 1:51.80 in the 200 free, 50.8 in the 100 back and 2:06.48 in the 200 I.M.
Thirlwell swims for the City of Newcastle Swim Club and is coached by Ian Oliver.
Thirlwell's signing adds to an impressive class that signed in the fall. The already talented group of signees include Peter Baer (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills HS), Stanley Czarnecki (Denver, Penn./Cucalico HS), James Dabney (Charlotte, N.C./Providence HS), Michael Russo (Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS), Zachary Samlund (Omaha, Neb./Westside HS), Burkley Showe (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington HS) and Jeffrey Sudbury (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow HS).
