KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women's track & field team has fallen out of the catbird's seat in the Trackwire 25. The Lady Vols, who were the preseason favorite and filled the No. 1 spot during the first four polls, stand at No. 3 in the most recent rankings.
Stanford leap-frogged UT and LSU to move to No. 1 with 50 points. LSU, with 36 points, heads a list of six Southeastern Conference schools, followed by Tennessee (33) in third, Florida (30) in fourth, South Carolina (23) in seventh, Auburn (18) in 10th and Georgia (8) in 21st.
The Trackwire 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by information gathered from coaches and NCAA-qualifying competitions across the country. This projection is generated by scoring the Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event.
Lady Vols ranked in the fifth edition of the Dandy Dozen include senior Nicole Cook (1st, 800 meters), sophomore Tianna Madison (1st, long jump/8th, 60 meters), freshman Cleo Tyson (3rd, 60 meters) and freshman Courtney Champion (12th, 60 meters). Tennessee's 4x400m relay (3rd) and distance medley relay (9th) also garnered attention.
Cook is the defending NCAA Indoor 800m champ and Madison was fifth indoors in the long jump a year ago, while the UT DMR was victorious at last year's national indoor meet. Tyson and Champion, meanwhile, are part of a class of newcomers that was ranked as the fifth-best in the nation by Track & Field News.
The Lady Vols continue their indoor itinerary on Saturday, as they compete in the Powered by Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Feb. 12.
