KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women's track & field team slipped one place in this week's Trackwire 25. The Lady Vols, who were the preseason favorite and filled the No. 1 spot during the first four polls, stand at No. 4 in the most recent rankings.
Stanford retained the top spot with 51 points, followed by LSU with 40 and Miami (Fla.) with 38. The Tigers head a list of six Southeastern Conference schools, followed by Tennessee (35) in fourth, Florida (29) in fifth, Auburn (23) in seventh, South Carolina (22) in ninth, and Georgia (11) and Arkansas (11) in 18th.
The Trackwire 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by information gathered from coaches and NCAA-qualifying competitions across the country. This projection is generated by scoring the Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event.
Lady Vols ranked in the sixth edition of the Dandy Dozen include senior Nicole Cook (1st, 800 meters), sophomore Tianna Madison (1st, long jump/7th, 60 meters), freshman Cleo Tyson (5th, 60 meters/6th, 200 meters), senior Toyin Olupona (9th, 60 meters) and freshman Courtney Champion (11th, 60 meters). Tennessee's 4x400m relay (4th) and distance medley relay (9th) also garnered attention.
Cook is the defending NCAA Indoor 800m champ and Madison was fifth indoors in the long jump a year ago, while the UT DMR was victorious at last year's national indoor meet. Tyson and Champion, meanwhile, are part of a class of newcomers that was ranked as the fifth-best in the nation by Track & Field News.
The Lady Vols continue their indoor itinerary on Friday, as they join the UT men in hosting the Tennessee Indoor Classic at Stokely Athletics Center. Field events begin at noon, and running events are slated to get started at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
