VOLS SECOND AFTER DAY ONE OF BULLDOG INVITATIONAL

The No. 10 Tennessee men's swimming and diving team is second with 282 points after the first day of the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga. Georgia leads with 283 points.
The Vols had five participants in the eight-individual final of the 200 individual medley. Casey Dauw won the event in 1:48.37, a B-cut time for NCAAs. Sophomore Michael Wolfe followed in fourth in 1:49.13, also a B-cut standard. Brad Boswell, Kiel Huston, Bryan Goldberg and Andrew Thirlwell took sixth through ninth, respectively.
"The team was very competitive and the kids are fighting hard," UT head coach John Trembley said. "We, as coaches, are enjoying the meet and tomorrow will be another great day.
The 400 medley relay squad of Michael Wolfe, Barry Murphy, Andrew Engle and Tyler Gustafson brought home the second win of the night for the Vols. The team's time of 3:15.82 is a B-cut standard time for the NCAA championships and two seconds faster than second-place Harvard.
Freshman Burkley Showe finished second on the 3-meter springboard with 384.20 points. Chris Colwill of Georgia won the event with 403.60. Colwill is the defending SEC champion on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Senior John Venditti finished eighth with 274.15.
"Burkley Showe was extremely strong in narrowly missing SEC champion (Chris) Colwill," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said.
Freshman Jeff Sudbury led off the second-place 200 free relay. The team finished in 1:21.49, a second behind first-place Georgia. Following Sudbury were Murphy, Engle and Gustafson.
Gustafson finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 20.65. Sudbury finished seventh in 21.03. Sudbury marked a season-best 20.77 in the preliminaries.
Oregon native and freshman Nolan Morrell finished sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:49.68. Morrell put up a season-best 4:28.19 in the prelims. Fellow freshman Peter Baer finished eighth in 4:30.46. Sebastian Renault won the event for the hosting Bulldogs.
The meet continues Saturday with prelims at 9:30 a.m. and finals following at 5 p.m. and concludes on Sunday with finals at 3 p.m.
