ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer diving team concluded day one of the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., on Friday after turning in a solid effort. Sophomore Vicky Linnell led the way by establishing a career-best score of 263.75 en route to a fourth-place finish from one-meters against a talented field.
"Vicky Linnell did a fantastic job tonight, and I am really pleased with her performance," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Lauren LeRoy struggled somewhat this morning, but we can figure that out and correct it. Brittany Fulmer was steady. Staley McCartney was a little bit off the mark, but we are looking forward to the platform for her. Overall it was a solid day, and hopefully we will step it up tomorrow and on Sunday. It will be a great test and learning experience."
Linnell's total of 263.75 nearly eclipsed the NCAA Zone standard (265.00). The native of Prospect, South Australia had advanced to the finals by virtue of a sixth-place finish in the preliminary round contested in the morning.
Sophomore Lauren LeRoy (Oshkosh, Wis.) picked up 13th place in preliminary action after recording a sum of 223.90. Junior captain Brittany Fulmer was close behind in 15th, as she registered a score of 215.50, while rookie Staley McCartney (Knoxville, Tenn.) claimed 19th with a total of 173.60.
The invitational continues on Saturday with the three-meter diving competition. There will be a preliminary and final round. The platform competition is scheduled to take place on Sunday. There will only be one round of diving.
