AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn Derby Invitational concluded on Sunday with the 14th-ranked Lady Volunteer golf team claiming fifth place. It is the third top-five showing in four fall tournaments for UT. Freshman Nicole Smith was the top Big Orange finisher, as she used a career best 218 to earn a tie for second place, also a personal low.
During the final round, Marci Turner (Tompksinville, Ky.) led the way for the Orange and White. The sophomore played stellar golf. She made two birdies and two pars in the first five holes to stand at one under. From that point on, Turner was perfect. She sunk two additional birdie putts, which complemented pars in between, to enter the clubhouse with a sparkling three-under-par 69. The 54-hole total of 219 placed her tied for fourth, an amazing feat considering she was tied for 18th entering Sunday.
Smith turned in a solid round for the third straight day, a good sign for the Big Orange faithful. The product of Riverside, Calif., had a challenging beginning to the round, with a two bogeys in the initial three holes. She proved her mettle, however, settling down to shoot two under from that point on. Smith sunk birdie putts at Nos. 7, 10, 12 and 18 to make the surge up the leaderboard.
Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) had a taxing last round, although she did play extremely well on Friday and Saturday. The junior made the turn at four over par, and with the exception of one hole, settled down nicely. She made six pars down the stretch and recorded an 81. Her three-round score of 228, the second lowest of her collegiate career, placed Cantwell in a tie for 28th.
Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) had a challenging start, as she stood at five over par 10 holes into action. The senior did not rattle, though, as she made par or better at six of the remaining holes to end the round with a score of 78. She claimed a tie for 37th with a final marker of 229.
Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) carded an 83 on Sunday to wrap up the tournament in alone in 83rd place with a score of 252.
Tennessee will be back in action from Nov. 11-13 for the Hooters Match Play Championships, the last event on the fall schedule.
