KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee standout sophomore golfer Marci Turner has been honored by GolfWorld Magazine, as she was named the "Most Surprising Player of the Year" to this point in the season. She claimed three top-five finishes in four fall events in helping lead the Lady Vols to a ranking of 14th in the final coaches' poll of the fall season.
The Tompkinsville, Ky., native has had a terrific year to this point, as she recorded her first career collegiate victory at the 2005 Cougar Classic. She finished the event with a sum of 212, which is the best ever by a UT sophomore and ties as the fourth-lowest overall score in school history. Her efforts helped lead the Big Orange to the team crown, and later in the week, she was named the National Player of the Week by both Golfweek and GolfWorld.
Turner claimed runner-up honors at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships with a total of 215. She followed the performance up with a fourth-place-tying effort at the Auburn Derby Invite on the strength of a 219.
The Lady Vols open up play in the spring by competing at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational from Feb. 20-21 in Tucson, Ariz.
