KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer golf team is set to play host to the ninth-annual Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships. Cherokee Country Club will serve as the site of the tournament for the second consecutive year, which will run Friday-Sunday.
The 19th-ranked Lady Vols are part of a 15-team field which features eight ranked squads, including No. 3 Arkansas and No. 4 Georgia. Other notables set to vie for the crown include No. 6 Purdue, two-time defending event champion and No. 15 Ohio State, No. 18 SMU, No. 20 Tulane and No. 23 Michigan State.
The Big Orange lineup has not changed since the Lady Tar Heel Invite. Marci Turner (Tompkinsville, Ky.), Violeta Retamoza (Knoxville, Tenn.), Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden), Nicole Smith (Riverside, Calif.) and Holly Cantwell (Morristown, Tenn.) have had a few strong weeks of practice and are poised to help UT make a run at the title.
Additionally, Jennifer Davis (Seymour, Tenn.) will compete in the event, playing as an individual.
Last year, Retamoza became the first Lady Vol golfer to claim medalist honors and the senior did so in exciting fashion. The 2005 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year battled Tulane's Alison Walshe down to the wire and held to win by one stroke. Retamoza's three-round total of 211 established an event record and matched the second-lowest score in the annals of Big Orange golf.
Action gets underway at Friday at 8:30 a.m.
