VOLS WIN SEASON OPENER OVER GEORGIA TECH, 136-97

ATLANTA - The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team opened the 2005-06 season Thursday with a 136-97 win over Georgia Tech at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
"I saw some good things today (Thursday)," UT head coach John Trembley said. "We spread the success across all classes and had some very nice swims.
The meet was a day of firsts for the UT freshmen, with first-year Vols Stan Czarnecki, Barry Murphy and Burkley Showe all picking up their first career wins.
Czarnecki won the 150-yard backstroke in 1:24.30. Fellow freshman Nolan Morrell exhibitioned the 150 back, but swam a fast 1:22.78.
Ireland native Murphy picked up his first career win for the Vols with a first-place finish in the 50-yard free in 20.82. Freshman Jeff Sudbuy finished fourth in 21.79.
Freshman Burkley Showe finished first on the 1-meter board with 349.58 points.
Senior John Venditti followed Showe's performance with a win of his own on the 3-meter board with 305.18.
Senior Tyler Gustafson won the 150-yard free in 1:11.82, two seconds faster than second-place Noah Copeland of Georgia Tech. Senior Bryan Goldberg finished fourth in 1:14.79.
Sophomore Adam Farnham won the 150-yard butterfly in 1:21.45 and fellow sophomore Michael Wolfe won the 500-yard free in 4:34.04.
Senior Kiel Huston exhibitioned the 150-yard breaststroke, and put up a 1:31.46 which would have tied for first.
The Vols opened with a relay win in the 200 medley relay in 1:29.63 and continued strong throughout the afternoon, sweeping all four relay events.
"The 200 medley relay swam a fine race," Trembley added. "Octavio Alesi's anchor leg was quite good.
Tennessee won the 400 medley in 3:24.18, the 600 medley relay in 5:48.05 and the 400 free relay in 2:58.78.
Next up for Tennessee is its SEC opener against Kentucky in Lexington Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
