The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team opens the 2005-06 season Thursday against Georgia Tech at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Start time in Atlanta is 2 p.m.
"Stu Wilson has assembled a very fine team," UT head coach John Trembley said. "Georgia Tech has an amazing facility and we feel fortunate we can race in the 1996 Olympic swimming center.
The Yellow Jackets hold a 7-3 series lead over the Vols dating back to 1934, which was the first season of varsity intercollegiate swimming at Tennessee. The Vols won last year's meeting in Atlanta 129-112.
"I am eager to be getting the chance to put our tough training over the past six weeks into competition mode," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Especially going against an outstanding team such as Georgia Tech in an Olympic facility.
Thursday marks the highly anticipated start to freshman diver Burkley Showe's career. He came into the Vols 2005 signing class as one of the most highly touted divers in the nation at the junior level. Showe's accolades include: U.S. Junior National Champion on the 1-meter board in 2001 and on the 3-meter board in 2001, 2003 and 2005, Fourth-place finish on the 3-meter board at the U.S. National Championships in 2005.
"I am looking forward to see how freshman Burkley Showe will perform and execute and to see sophomore Ryan Rincon's new found confidence and strength," Parrington added. "Senior John Venditti has been struggling with a hyper-extended knee but will be able to go Thursday. I am interested in seeing how he performs.
