BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Tennessee senior swimmer Julia Stowers has been named the SEC Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. The Knoxville native put together an outstanding performance over the weekend in dual meets against Northwestern and Arkansas. Against the Wildcats, she won the 500y freestyle (4:46.20), 1,650y freestyle (16:38.73) and took second in the 400y IM (4:30.04).
Stowers then followed up that performance by winning the 1000y freestyle (9:52.35) and 200y freestyle against Arkansas. The time in the 1000y free broke the Arkansas Natatorium's previous record (10:01.04.) by more than eight seconds. Most impressive though, is that her time of 1:50.83 in the 200y freestyle, which provisionally qualified the senior for the NCAA Championships. This was achieved less than five minutes after she won the 1000y free.
Stowers and the rest of the Lady Vols will be back in action on Saturday, as they play host to LSU and Virginia on Senior Day. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
