With individuals finishing first, second and third, and another placing among the top eight U.S. athletes in her event at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Tennessee women reaped a total of seven All-America citations from five athletes at the recent national meet in Austin, Texas.
The Lady Vols, under the direction of second-year Head Coach J.J. Clark, wrap up the 2004 campaign with nine athletes achieving a cumulative 20 certificates during the campaign. That sum of honorees is the most by the UT women's program since the 1984 squad produced 12 All-Americans en route to second-place finishes at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Tennessee garnered outdoor All-America performances in the 400 meters from Dee Dee Trotter (Decatur, Ga.), who won a national championship; in the 800 meters from senior Kameisha Bennett (Dayton, Ohio), who was second; in the long jump from freshman Tianna Madison (Elyria, Ohio), who was 12th overall and one of the top eight Americans; and the 4x400m relay, which took third with junior Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.), Bennett, junior Nicole Cook (Petersburg, Va.) and Trotter carrying the baton.
During the indoor campaign, which concluded in March with UT placing fourth at the NCAA meet in Fayetteville, Ark., eight Lady Vols earned All-America distinction. That group included Bennett in the 4x400mR; Cook in the 800m, DMR and 4x400mR; senior Lindsay Hyatt (Auburn, Calif.) in the mile and DMR; Madison in the long jump, sophomore Brooke Novak (Kaukauna, Wis.) in the DMR; junior Toyin Olupona (Orillia, Ontario, Canada) in the 60m; freshman Leslie Treherne (Chesapeake, Va.) in the 4x400m; and Trotter in the 400m, DMR and 4x400mR.
