TENNESSEE'S McCALLEY CHARTS NCAA REGIONAL QUALIFIER IN 5000 METERS

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.
Karns High School product Elizabeth McCalley finished eighth in the championship division of the 5000 meters and checked in with an NCAA Regional qualifying time to pace the University of Tennessee women Thursday night in the Penn Relays Distance Carnival at Franklin Field.
After UT's DMR won a Championship of America "relay wheel" earlier in the day, the junior from Knoxville gave UT Head Coach J.J. Clark another reason to smile on the squad's first day of action at the meet. Already qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 3000-meter steeplechase, thanks to her school record effort at the Sea Ray Relays two weekends ago, McCalley qualified for a spot in the 5000 meters as well with a clocking of 16:55.13.
McCalley's mark is a career best by a whopping minute, topping the 17:56.29 readout she charted at the 2003 Southeastern Conference Championship meet at UT's Tom Black Track. The time moves McCalley to number 12 on the UT all-time performers list.
The Lady Vols also got a career-best outing in the 5K from senior Jessica Southers (Ashland, Ky.), who was 14th at 17:06.29. Sophomore Felicia Guliford (Gallup, N.M.) was 15th at 17:08.60, while sophomore Carly Matthews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was 30th at 17:28.36 in her collegiate debut at that distance.
Sophomore Katie Flaute (Dayton, Ohio) capped the late night distance party off by logging a career-topping 35:38.44 to place ninth in the Olympic development division of the 10,000 meters. The mark was a significant upgrade from her prior PR of 36:30.89 at last year's meet in Philly, when she placed 22nd. It also represents the fastest 10K turned in by a Lady Vol at the Penn Relays since Alison Quelch sped to a 34:08.0 result in 1985.
"Not a bad night at the distance carnival for the Lady Vols," Clark said. "Elizabeth is showing her real abilities in several different areas. "She qualified (for NCAA Regionals) in her second event and had a minute PR, and Katie had a 58-second PR herself. It was a super effort by those two, and Jessica Southers came up with a PR as well."
Tennessee is back in action on Friday at 2:55 p.m., as juniors Toyin Olupona (Orillia, Ontario, Canada) and Dee Dee Trotter (Decatur, Ga.), and freshman Tianna Madison (Elyria, Ohio) compete in the prelims of the 100-meter dash. At 6:10 p.m., UT is scheduled to wind up its day in the sprint medley relay, an event the Lady Vols finished second in a year ago by 29/100ths of a second.
