RALEIGH, N.C.
Tennessee's sprint medley relay raced to victory, the 4x1500m unit finished second among collegiate squads, and Katie Flaute and Tianna Madison bagged NCAA regional qualifying marks to pace the Lady Volunteers Friday in the opening session of the adidas Raleigh Relays.
The UT sprint medley relay, which is comprised of junior Toyin Olupona (Orillia, Ontario, Canada), junior Dee Dee Trotter (Decatur, Ga.), junior Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.) and senior Kameisha Bennett (Dayton, Ohio), rolled to a time of 3:50.85 to win comfortably over second-place Essex Community College (3:53.57) and third-place Seton Hall (3:54.48). The Lady Vols, who recorded the fifth-fastest pace in program history in a race that features legs of 200, 200, 400 and 800 meters, will likely face off against those two teams again when UT hosts the Sea Ray Relays, April 7-10, at Tom Black Track.
In the 4x1500m relay, Tennessee tallied the second-fastest clocking in school annals at 18:04.15 and made a run at another victory. Despite posting the best 4x1500m outing since 1993, the combination of senior Jessica Southers (Ashland, Ky.), senior Lindsay Hyatt (Auburn, Calif.), junior Elizabeth McCalley (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Brooke Novak (Kaukauna, Wis.) crossed the line second among collegiate teams and third overall. Friar Track Club claimed the win with a run of 17:44.83, while Providence College took the collegiate trophy at 17:51.08.
Individually, Madison earned a ticket to the NCAA Mideast Regional meet in Baton Rouge, La., on May 28-29 with an effort that was good for second in the long jump. The rookie jumper from Elyria, Ohio, who earned All-America honors during the indoor season, charted a top leap of 19-9.50/6.03m Friday afternoon to snag runner-up status. Trotter, known more for her prowess as a sprinter and relay contributor, had a favorable showing in the long jump as well, taking sixth with a measurement of 19-2.50/5.85m.
Flaute, from Dayton, Ohio, joined her fellow Ohioan in earning a regional berth. The sophomore clocked in nearly two seconds below the NCAA standard with a career-best 16:54.52 readout in the 5000 meters. That mark was good for 18th place against a strong field, while classmate Felicia Guliford (Gallup, N.M.) was 22nd in 17:03.83.
In the 100-meter dash prelims, a trio of Lady Vols posted the third, fourth and fifth-fastest clockings of heat one to earn a ticket to Saturday's final. Madison at 11.79, Olupona at 11.80 and Trotter at 11.86 all moved on, with Madison and Olupona narrowly missing the NCAA regional standard of 11.78.
The Lady Vols also had three in action in the 100m hurdles, but freshman Edra Finley (Mobile, Ala.), sophomores Catherine Wright (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Caitlin Ward (Gibsonia, Pa.) were unable to advance to Saturday's finals.
"Overall, it was a good first day for us,??? Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark said. ??oeWe came here and won one relay, were the second collegiate team in another, and got a pair of regional qualifiers from Katie Flaute and Tianna Madison. I thought they did what I wanted them to do today."
Saturday's slate at the adidas Raleigh Relays commences at 10:30 a.m. and is expected to wrap up at 5 p.m.
