LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior sprinter Sean Lambert posted his best outing of the season Saturday night at the Sevigne Husker Invitational on the fast track in Nebraska's Devaney Sports Center. Lambert finished second in a season-best 6.70 to better his NCAA Indoor provisional qualifier in the 60m dash. Meanwhile, Lambert's eighth-place, 21.50 effort in the 200m dash also stands as a season-best time and moves him closer to the provisional standard in that event.
"Some of our leading athletes did some good things," head coach Bill Webb said. "I'm particularly proud of Jak Taylor in the 400 meters, Garland Porter in the weight throw, Tim Kelly in the 3,000 meters and Sean Lambert in the 60 and 200 meters. We have some mixed results. Sometimes things are a little better than they look on paper. This was a really competitive meet. We saw improvements in some people."
Junior transfer Taylor gave Tennessee another top-four finish in the sprints. Taylor took fourth in the 400m dash in 47.73, nearing his season-best time.
Junior transfer Porter also continued his steady improvement. Porter's eighth-place, 63-11 mark in the weight throw betters his lifetime-best by a foot and missed the NCAA Indoor provisional mark by three-fourths of an inch. Porter's 56-4.5 mark to finish 12th in the shot put also stands as a season-best effort. Kelly led the Tennessee distance corps with a seventh-place, 8:17.26, a seven-second improvement on his season-best effort in the 3,000m run.
Mike Yurcho finished third in the pole vault with a 16-4.75 clearance. Chandler Rice took seventh with a 15-11 jump.
Jonathan Wade's 6.85 time in the 60m dash preliminaries stands as a season-best. However, Wade's 6.89 time in the semifinals didn't make the finals cut. In the throws, Josh Whisman offered up a season-best 52-10.25 throw in the shot put to finish 21st. Whisman finished 14th in the weight throw with a 58-1.25 mark, close to his season-best distance.
Tennessee's 4x400m relay unit ran to eighth in 3:15.67. Leadoff man Taylor and anchor Paul Cross authored the best splits. Jacob Dennis and Aries Merritt took the second and third leg, respectively.
Robert Boulware finished 10th in the 60m hurdles semifinals with a time of 8.07. Freshman Merritt got caught on the second to last hurdle and didn't advance from the prelims. Brett Frykberg tied for 15th in the high jump with a 6-6.25 leap. In the middle distances, Jeff Day finished the mile in 4:18.25 to place 28th. Meanwhile, Cross ran to a 1:55.54, 21st-place in the 800m run.
"We'll see some of the same people in New York next weekend [the Armory Invitational]," Webb said. "We look forward to putting together a whole team there. We'll have twice as many competing there as we did this weekend."
