The No. 10 Tennessee men's swimming and diving team will go in different directions this weekend as the swimmers travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Nike Cup Invitational, while the divers head to the highly competitive Georgia Tech Invitational Nov. 18-21.
"The Nike Cup Invitational is an unbelievably competitive preview of the NCAA Championships," UT head coach John Trembley said. "ACC powerhouses North Carolina and Virginia Tech should pose a solid test for our swimmers."
After a three week lay-off the Vols are looking to hit the pool in trying to repeat as winners of the Nike Cup where they won last year. Prelims take place at 10 a.m. each day with the finals slated for 6 p.m.
The divers return to a familiar venue in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center where the Vols (2-0) opened the season with a 129-112 win over the Ramblin' Wreck. Diving starts Friday with the 1-meter competition followed by the 3-meter on Saturday and 10-meter on Sunday.
Senior Phillip Jones, who posted a season-high 332.70 on the 1-meter springboard at the Georgia Tech meet, looks to lead the Vol diving contingent to another successful outing this weekend.
"I'm excited to take the squad to Georgia Tech for the principle purpose of being more familiar with their fine facility, but also to compete against some of our more traditional foes," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said.
Competition includes SEC powers Georgia, Florida and Kentucky along with zone competitors Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State and Miami.
