Head Coach J.J. Clark and his staff haven't wasted any time in moving the University of Tennessee women's track & field team back into the national picture. That upward movement was clearly reflected Tuesday in the Trackwire 25, which has the Lady Volunteers rated at No. 11, marking the highest indoor position ever in that poll by UT.
The Big Orange women collected 19 points to tie with Big 12 program Kansas State and are slotted as the fourth-highest Southeastern Conference school. League foes picked ahead of Clark's squad are No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Florida and No. 9 Arkansas. Other SEC teams recognized by Trackwire include Georgia at No. 14, South Carolina at No. 18, Mississippi State at No. 23 and Vanderbilt at No. 24.
"Polls are just polls," Clark said. "They reflect what people think about your program, which is flattering. What is more important, however, is that our team goes out and makes those predictions come true. We'll see how it all plays out."
The poll is based upon how many points Trackwire editor Gary Verigin believes each team will score at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships. In his weekly "Dandy Dozen" report, Verigin predicts Tennessee juniors Nicole Cook and Dee Dee Trotter to finish second in the 800 and 400 meters, respectively, and freshman Tianna Madison to place sixth in the long jump. Cook (indoor 800m) and Trotter (outdoor 400m) were NCAA runners-up a year ago.
"Our media guide theme this year is 'Have You Heard?,'" Clark said. "We added the phrase 'Great Things Are Happening' right after that. Being ranked 11th is just another example of the positive things that are occurring at Tennessee and how we are moving upward. All of our focus remains on doing our very best, and if that puts us in the top 15 or top 10, great."
