LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Tennessee's track and field squad only contested two events in a limited schedule Friday night at the Kentucky Invitational, but results from the pole vault and 35-lb. weight throw showcased Volunteer improvement.
In a competitive pole vault situation, Chandler Rice nabbed the team lead with a second-place, season-best 16-8 clearance over the track at Nutter Field House. Transfer Mike Yurcho finished seventh with a 15-5.75 leap. Freshman multieventer Chris Helwick kept up his improvement in the vault, clearing a season-best 14-6 to earn 12th. Meanwhile, decathlete Blake Sabo also managed 14-0 feet, a respectable early-season vault for a multieventer. Former Vol Rocky Danners took the win with a 17-0 clearance.
In the weight throw, transfer Garland Porter made his Tennessee debut and didn't disappoint. Porter took fourth in a strong field with a 59-4.75 effort, the leading mark on the squad. Josh Whisman also contributed a season-best throw with a 55-9.75 mark to earn eighth. Knoxville Central grad Jim Sexton hovered just short of his season-best distance with a 53-1.5 measurement to earn 11th.
Tennessee puts in its first full day of work in the young indoor season Saturday with a full slate of events in the wings.
