FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
University of Tennessee Women's Head Swimming Coach Dan Colella and Diving Coach Dave Parrington's swimming and diving squad returns to the Southeastern Conference fray with a meet against Arkansas beginning at noon at the Arkansas Natatorium in Fayetteville, Ark.
"We got off to a great start last week and we would like to see the time ride that momentum, which we feel confident they will do," Colella said. "Arkansas has really developed into a strong opponent in the last few years. We expect some great races this Saturday particularly in the sprint and distance freestyle events."
Tennessee is coming off the heels of a dominating performance against Northwestern in which the Lady Vols tamed the Wildcats, 207-144. Freshman phenom Megan Tomes lit up the pool en route to four individual event titles and two relay crowns. Tomes also narrowly missed posting provisional qualifying times in the 100 LCM freestyle and the 200y freestyle.
Arkansas enters the competition with a 1-5 record, 0-2 in the SEC, in dual meets this season. The Lady 'Backs lost to Auburn (81-58) and Missouri (81-59) in a tri meet to open the season. Arkansas then suffered a loss to Florida, 164.5-121.5, on Oct. 23, before capturing its lone triumph of the season against Drury, 107-96, on Oct. 25. Arkansas is currently riding a two-meet losing streak as the Lady 'Backs lost to Texas A&M, 178-113, on Nov. 1, before taking a 206-88 drubbing at the hands of Purdue on Jan. 6.
The Lady Vols hold the advantage in the all-time series between the two squads with an unblemished 4-0 record. Tennessee and Arkansas last faced each other on Jan. 26, 2002, when the Big Orange claimed a 163-137 triumph in Knoxville. The series began on Nov. 21, 1992, in Fayetteville, Ark., as the orange-clads downed the Lady 'Backs 143-100 in a tri meet that included Kansas.
Also of note, Tennessee is 3-0 under head coach Dan Colella with his initial win coming on Nov. 7, 1997, when the Lady Vols dominated Arkansas, 154-46, as well as downed Miami, 139-82, in a tri meet.
Upon completion of the meet, the squad heads home before hosting the Florida Gators at the Student Aquatic Center in Knoxville at 1 p.m. on Jan. 31.
