University of Tennessee Rowing Head Coach Lisa Glenn has announced her team's schedule for the 2003-04 season. In an attempt to prepare the Lady Vols for a return visit to the NCAA Championships this season, the challenging slate will take the squad to regattas across the country, from Boston, Mass., to San Diego, Calif.
The competitive fall season will officially get underway on Oct. 11 when UT travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., to participate in the Chattanooga Head Race on the Tennessee River. A week later, Glenn will take her top rowers to Boston, Mass., where they will vie for their third-consecutive Club 8+ championship and compete in the Championship 8+ race at the prestigious Head of the Charles. Following the lone event in Knoxville of the fall, the Head of the Tennessee on Oct. 25, the Big Orange will conclude the early portion of its schedule with a visit to Charlottesville, Va., for the Rivanna Romp on Nov. 16.
"The fall is a time to prepare as well as test the competitive waters as we progress toward winter and spring," Glenn said. "Our fall competitive schedule offers a combination of development opportunity and downright competitive challenge."
With the experience gained in the fall added to the progress made during the winter and spring training camps, the Orange and White will begin the spring campaign with three dual matches at home versus Notre Dame, Minnesota and Louisville on March 13, 20 and 27, respectively. Glenn's troops will then begin a grueling stretch that will be crucial in their postseason quest, as they travel to the San Diego Crew Classic to be held April 3-4, the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic on April 10 and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on April 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Last season, UT's Varsity 8+ shell demonstrated its talents by claiming gold in the Grand Final at two of these events en route to a 14th-place ranking in the USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll.
"In the spring, every competition is important to us for specific developmental reasons as we progress through the season," Glenn said. "The events we host give us a great opportunity to share our sport with the community, and we appreciate the ability we have to row out of our own boathouse in the early season. We definitely look forward to going on the road to represent our program and the university in other places."
After a final tune-up versus Washington State and Oregon State in Pullman, Wash., on April 24, the Lady Vols will once again make their final push toward the NCAA Championships when they host the eighth edition of the Lexus Central/Southern Sprints on May 15-16 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. With a challenging schedule in place, Glenn's squad hopes to position itself well for an even more impressive finish than the highly successful 2002-03 squad accomplished and return to the nation's premier intercollegiate rowing event on May 28-30.
"We are truly looking forward to getting started with the team next week," Glenn said. "We have quite a bit of work to do and my staff and I cannot wait to pick up the tools and start building."
