KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
University of Tennessee Head Rowing Coach Lisa Glenn announced the hiring of Shannon Daley as an assistant coach on Wednesday.
Daley joins the Lady Vol staff after serving a five-year tenure as the first assistant and program coordinator for women's rowing at Duke University. Additionally, she directed the men's club team in the capacity of head coach from 2000-03. While mentoring the Blue Devils, Daley helped guide the women's squad to a spot in the United States Rowing Association Coaches Poll Top 20 and to achieve Atlantic Coast Conference second-place finishes in 2002 and 2003.
"I'm very excited to have Shannon joining us," Glenn said. "She will bring a good amount of experience in recruiting and coaching competitive Division I athletes, and I'm looking forward to her making a positive contribution."
While Daley will be instrumental in all facets of the rowing program, her primary responsibilities will involve recruiting and working with walk-on athletes.
"I am excited and honored to be a Lady Vol," Daley said. "This is an incredible institution with an amazing leader at the helm of the rowing program. I'm really looking forward to getting started with the team and working with Lisa Glenn."
Previously, Daley held the position of head women's rowing coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., where she dramatically improved the program, increasing the roster from six student-athletes to 40 within a year. During her term between 1996-98, Daley also played a part in upgrading the facilities, as she was instrumental in an effort to build a $600,000 boathouse.
A well-established collegiate rower, Daley competed in the varsity 8+ shell at the University of Wisconsin and was selected as an NCAA Scholar Athlete in 1993 and 1994. She earned her bachelor's degree in communications from UW in 1994.
